Rules and Regs

Dirt Sweat & Gears is a USAC sactioned event. USAC Cycling MTB rules will apply, with a few caveats. Namely, The Yuri Rule – See #5.

For 2010 please be aware of this USAC rule:

6D2. Authorised technical assistance during a race consists of repairs to or the replacement of any part of the bicycle other than the frame. Bike changes are not permitted and the rider must cross the finishing line with the same handlebar number plate that he had at the start.

In case of heavy rain:

In the event we should experience heavy rainfall like 2010 the course and duration of the race will be shortened. Details will be determined prior to the race start.

DSG rules and regs are simple:

  1. There will be a pre-race meeting held at 8am on Saturday the 15th. The team captain or co-captain must attend, however everyone is encouraged to do so. Everyone on your team is responsible for the rules as they are written here and for last minute changes announced at the pre-race meeting on Saturday.
  2. Support on the course may only be supplied by other registered racers – Not your support crew. The registered racer may supply equipment, tools or their bike. If a bike is traded then the number plate must also be put on the new bike.
  3. Water or food may be supplied to any racer by any other racer at any place along the course.
  4. Only registered racers, event staff, or media staff may ride the course. Others may walk along the course.
  5. Once on course, a racer must complete his or her lap- UNLESS YOU INVOKE THE YURI RULE. This rule allows riders an escape route that dissects the course. The YURI RULE will be explained fully at the pre-race meeting.
  6. Teams have the option of canceling a racer’s lap and restarting the lap from the log in tent with a substitute. A canceled lap does not count as a completed lap. A team member can cancel a racer’s lap by notifying the team’s registrar at the start/finish tent. The new racers time will start when the canceled racer’s time started. Once a cancellation is made, it can not be rescinded.
  7. Racers must display their numbers on their bikes while racing. If there is a bike swap, the racer’s number must be transferred to the new bike. our number must be on your bike while you are racing.
  8. Racers riding bikes have the right of way over those pushing bikes. If you are pushing a bike, please stay off the rideable portion of the trail so riders may pass. If you are lapping another racer, call out “passing on your left/right”. It is up to the passing rider to pass safely.
  9. Short cutting the course is not allowed. If a racer short cuts the course their entire team will be disqualified!
  10. Be cool. Poor sportsmanship, use of profane or abusive language and other unsportsmanlike behavior towards a racer, volunteer, event staff or spectator will not be tolerated. Offending riders/teams are subject to a warning or immediate disqualification.
  11. Protests may be made by team captain or co-captain. A protest must written, detailing the incident, witness names, addresses and contact information and signed. Also, a fee of $25 cash must accompany each protest. Protests may be given to a race director at any time during the race up to 30 minutes after posting of the final results. After review, the race directors will decide on the final ruling. If the rule is in favor of the protesting team, the $25 will be returned. If the protest is overruled, the protesting team forfeits the $25.
  12. Please keep noise to a minimum. Respect other campers.
  13. During the night (Mandatory after 7 P) the riders must have a primary light source (10 watts at a minimum) in addition to a back up light source (flashlight or another lighting system). Each racer must have a rear red light source, either blinking or solid. Racers entering the course two hours before sunset must have a primary, secondary, and rear light when leaving the timing tent. Specific times will announced at the racer meeting.
  14. All teams and Solos must be logged in before the 9 a.m. start. The racer finishing their lap will sign out with the registrar. The next racer will log in and their time then will log out the next racer time. The racer on deck should tell the registrar their name to make the process quicker. If a racer logs out (completes a lap) and their teammate is not there to race, the clock keeps running! Racers logging out should check the time written down to make sure it is written correctly. The registrars do not have updated results. Updated results will be posted continually throughout the race at a designated location.
  15. A racer may race consecutive laps. The racer must log in to the registrar the registrar then writes down the time. The racer then races their next lap.
  16. The race starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Each team’s final placing will be determined by the number of laps the team or solo has completed and the sequential order of finish within the team’s or solo’s last lap. Teams and solo racers may finish before 9 p.m. without being disqualified. For example, a team or solo racer that has completed 10 laps with a finish time of 9:01 p.m. would beat a team or solo racer that completed 10 laps with a finish time of 9:05 p.m. The last lap must be started before 8 p.m. No racers may head out on course after 8 p.m. Please let us know if your team stops before the cutoff.
  17. In case of a disastrous situation due to weather or any other extenuating circumstance preventing continuation or scoring of the event or creates a racing environment that is deemed too dangerous for the participants, the race directors may postpone or cancel the race as of a certain time. The race may be restarted if the weather or circumstances allow. A restart procedure will be put into place at direction of the race director. If the race is cancelled final results will be calculated based on each team’s or solos last completed lap. This is a last resort option.
  18. If a racer stops to assist another injured racer, emergency personnel will notify the timing tent with the name and number of the assisting racer. Race staff will then inform the team of the assisting racer to prepare the next rider on their team. That rider will be allowed to start his lap based on the assisting racer’s interpreted lap time which will be based on the assisting riders average lap time (2 or more laps) or the teams average lap time.
  19. Race smart, have fun, expand your horizons.
